On Tuesday, Feb. 8, the Polk County Wolverines JV teams played host to their fiercest rivals, the Hendersonville Bearcats.
The teams split the games evenly, with the Polk girls dominating Hendersonville but the boys losing in disappointing fashion.
The girl’s game got rolling right away for the Lady Wolverines as the first quarter ended with Polk holding a commanding lead 15-1. Polk continued to build their lead as they outworked Hendersonville on both the offensive and defensive boards.
Polk got good effort out of Shea Wheeler, who gave Polk 10 points, got several steals and countless rebounds in just one half of play. The first half ended with Polk leading 37-5.
The second half followed the same line as the first for the Wolverines as they came out with great pressure on both ends and opened up a 50-12 lead. The Wolverine’s Lyric Flood #34 was a constant thorn in Hendersonville’s side as she was involved in every hustle play throughout the game and showed that she just wanted it more than her Hendersonville counterparts.
Polk continued this sort of effort for the entire second half and came out with a statement win that shows how far they’ve come this season.
Unfortunately, the JV guys didn’t continue the trend the girls started. At first, it seemed the game would be competitive as Polk kept it close throughout the first half, but in the second half the wheels fell off. The guys just couldn’t get into a rhythm on offense and Hendersonville capitalized on sloppy passing by the Wolverines and dominated the second half as the Wolverines fell 70-45.
