A new adult day care center could be open shortly after the first of the year in Polk County.&bsp; The county has approved a contract with the adult day care provider Rutherford Life Services.Renovations are being made to the center, located in a rear building at Polk Countys new Meeting Place senior center off Skyuka Road at the former Carolina Classical School.Commissioners Monday approved a five-year contract with Rutherford Life Services by a 4-1 vote. Commissioner Tommy Melton cast the sole vote against, stating that he feels St. Lukes Hospital’s Community Health Connections program was a better deal for Polk County. Melton said that Community Health Connections offered to pay for utilities and offered a three year contract. But commissioner Warren Watson said that other commissioners are very pleased with Rutherford Lifes existing adult day in Rutherford County and the county would have provided water and electricity for Community Health Connections as well. Watson also said Rutherford Life Services had wanted an eight-year contract and the county wanted three years, so five years was a good compromise.Commissioners also approved a paving contract for one of the last few renovations to the building, so that Rutherford Life Services can be approved by the state for a license. The countys renovations to the building have included paving, a walkway, upgrades to the bathroom and a sprinkler system.Commissioners recently approved up to $60,000 from its fund balance to complete renovations in order to get the center open as soon as possible.
