Tryon Country Club held their 6th annual Scratch Scramble Thursday, November 12. This event attracts area pros and low handicap amateurs playing a four person captains choice format.
The remnants of Tropical Storm Ida created wet conditions for the 36 players who teed off at 11 a.m. The Donald Ross designed TCC course drains well so everything was playable and the greens were fast and in wonderful shape thanks to Fred Edwards, Jr. and his staff.
There was a tie for first place at 16 under par (56) between two teams, the team of Tim Nix, Fred Edwards, Jr. Bob Bell and Cleve Nichols and the Meadowbrook team of William Deck,Greg Parker, Jimmy Reynolds and Rocky Burgess. The Nix team won the scorecard playoff to take first place.
Third place went to the team of Mike Shannon, Pat Shannon, Trey Dusenbury and Tadd Fujikawa with a score of 60.
Mike Shannon (originally from Columbus) is one of the top short game and putting teachers in the country and based at Sea Island, Ga. He teaches over 30 touring professionals including Tadd Fujikawa who was a team partner in our event.
Tadd is best known as the teenager who was the youngest to qualify for a U.S.Open in 2006 and the second youngest to make a cut in a PGA Tour event at the Sony Open in his native Hawaii.
This past year at the Sony he vaulted to within two shots of the lead after a third round 62 and eventually finished in 30th place.
Following play contestants enjoyed an oyster roast and refreshments on the porch of the club.
