As an additional distinction, N.C. state champion tree status was assigned to a small number of Treasured Trees. The Common hackberry, or celtis occidentalis, located at the Polk County Chamber of Commerce, was such a tree,
earning the champion designation.
PAC Project Coordinator Walter presented Chamber Board members with the state certificate certifying the hackberry as a champion.
&dquo;Honoring and preserving outstanding trees is an obvious and wonderful expression of the way we care for our surroundings and demonstrate our love for nature,&dquo; stated Walter.
&dquo;These trees speak to us through their vitality and splendor in all seasons and help us visualize a future that is sustainable and viable for generations to come.&dquo;
