The new park that has been opened at the corner of Markham Road and West Livingston Street in Tryon will be named and dedicated on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. at the site of the park.

This project, spearheaded by the Eastside Citizens Advisory Committee, is part of a continuing effort to beautify and rejuvenate the Eastside Community of Tryon.

The park, which comprises property formerly used as the parking area for Bryan&squo;s Store and the home of John and Ida Rogers, has been under development for the past year, and recently was opened to the public.

Dr. Warren Carson, chair of the Eastside Citizens Advisory Committee, describes the park as &dquo;still evolving.&dquo; According to Carson, plans include permanent fencing and lighting.

&dquo;We want this park to be a place of beauty and security,&dquo; says Carson. &dquo;And we want it to be family friendly.&dquo;

The park was developed with a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation and contributions from other entities, including the Tryon Downtown Development Committee.

The work on the park was accomplished under the supervision of Joel Burrell, director of public works for the Town of Tryon, and town commissioner Roy Miller.

The public is invited to the naming and dedication ceremony, which will be followed by light refreshments. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the fellowship hall of the St. Luke CME Church across the street from the church.

The park was developed by the Town of Tryon and the EastSide Citizens Advisory Committee with funding from a $4,000 grant from the Unrestricted Fund of the Polk County Community Foundation.

The new park is convenient to area residents, the congregations of three churches located nearby and the families living in homes recently built by Habitat for Humanity. The creation of the park has been part of redevelopment plans for the Eastside neighborhood.
